Lift Your Organization’s Ethical Game by Cultivating a Culture of Compliance and Collaboration

Risk & Compliance magazine discussed how to build a culture of compliance and collaboration.

R&C: In your experience, why is a culture of compliance and collaboration so important in the workplace?

Turco: Culture is all about shared accountability, ownership and working towards a common goal, whatever that goal might be.

A strong culture is more receptive to compliance because you have built something that people want to see succeed and want to protect.

People want to feel like they are part of something, building a culture; and letting compliance be part of that culture can help accomplish that goal. But it is important to recognize that culture and compliance are two different things that go hand in hand.

The better your culture, the more natural a fit it is for compliance to be a part of it. If your culture is toxic, it will be harder to stay compliant and encourage ethical behavior.

In terms of the roles of trust, transparency and collaboration, and their relationship with culture and compliance, it is simple to put into words but difficult to execute. Transparency within an organization is the foundation of trust; the trust of employees and management, and customers want to see that you are doing the right thing.

The execution of strategy fails because of a lack of trust, transparency and collaboration, and in an environment of low trust, people feel less comfortable speaking up and reporting misconduct. This is why collaboration is the building block to trust; the more teams communicate, discuss different opinions and solutions, the better the outcome, and the more employees have a voice the better a company is able to execute on a strategy.
