HISTORY OF NATIONAL COMPLIANCE OFFICER DAY
In the U.S., corporations started developing compliance programs in the 1970s and 1980s in response to self-regulation incentives built into legislation like the Occupational Safety and Health Act. In the 1990s, as corporate scandals garnered international attention, the position of compliance officer became even more important as the public-at-large, as well as the court system, sought accountability.
In the decades since, the profession has evolved and now plays a vital role, often reporting directly to the CEO. In today’s rapidly changing world, businesses and organizations face multiple threats, both internally and externally, on a daily basis. Compliance officers are tasked with reducing their organization’s vulnerability while also ensuring applicable regulations are followed and meticulously reported. Ultimately, compliance officers play a significant role in maintaining business continuity in the midst of disruption, safeguarding not only their organizations, but the economic stability of a global economy.
In 2016, SAI360 launched National Compliance Officer Day to recognize and honor compliance professionals for the important role they play within their companies, as well as the stability they ultimately provide our communities.
WHY IS NATIONAL COMPLIANCE OFFICER DAY SO IMPORTANT?
- Compliance officers help maintain business continuity and economic stability
Try to imagine a world where regulations went unchecked and there was an absence of accountability. A wild west approach cannot support today’s global economy, which is dependent upon recognized standards and economic stability.
- We learn more about compliance officers
On National Compliance Officer Day, we learn more about the profession and its impact on society. Not only does this helps us better appreciate their contributions, but it also reminds us of the important role we play by partnering with compliance officers throughout the year to ensure rules are followed and risks are addressed.
- Compliance affects all of us
When organizations prioritize ethics and compliance, everyone wins.
