HISTORY OF NATIONAL COMPLIANCE OFFICER DAY

In the U.S., compliance programs began taking shape in the 1970s and 1980s, spurred by self-regulation incentives from legislation like the Occupational Safety and Health Act. By the 1990s, as corporate scandals started making headlines, the role of the compliance officer gained traction, becoming a key player in ensuring accountability in the eyes of both the public and the courts.

Over the years, the role of the compliance officer has expanded dramatically, with many now reporting directly to the CEO or board of directors. In a global, increasingly remote, and digitally interconnected world, businesses face a wide range of threats, from cybersecurity breaches to regulatory shifts, every day. Compliance officers are at the forefront, tasked with reducing these risks by implementing strong internal controls and ensuring all applicable regulations are followed and thoroughly documented. Their work is crucial to maintaining business continuity during times of disruption. And in safeguarding the integrity of the organization.

In 2016, SAI360 launched National Compliance Officer Day to recognize and honor compliance professionals for the innovation they bring to their companies and the stability they provide for our communities.
